Birkenhead Priory & St Mary's Tower, Priory Street, Birkenhead CH41 5JH Telephone 0151 666 1249. This Benedictine Monastery established in around 1150, is the oldest standing building on Merseyside. For more information visit their website

Birkenhead Tramway, 1 Taylor Street, Birkenhead, CH41 1BG Telephone 0151 647 2128. Take the tramway from Woodside Visitor Centre to The Old Colonial pub at the Taylor Street terminus. From the tram you may take a guided tour of the Heritage Centre housing a collection of restored and part-restored local buses and trams, and vehicles working for Wirral Museums. Brimstage Hall, Brimstage Road, Brimstage, Wirral CH63 6HD. Telephone 07919 674977. The oldest part of the building was built in medieval times and now houses various craft and gift shops and a restaurant. There is also a small family farm with play area, free parking and tractor and trailer rides throughout the summer.

Leasowe Lighthouse, Leasowe Common, Moreton, Wirral CH46 4TA. Telephone (Rangers) 0151 678 5488. This is Britain's oldest brick-built lighthouse and in its central position on the coast between two major rivers, close to the maritime centre of Liverpool and the Mersey on one side and the naturalist attractions of the Dee and Hilbre island at the other, is becoming acknowledged as a focal point for many interests and activities in the North Wirral Coastal Park. Port Sunlight Village. Telephone 0151 644 6466. This beautiful garden village was created by William Hesketh Lever in 1888 to house his factory workers. The village includes a hotel, church, art gallery, school and theatre. For more information visit their website.

Woodside Ferry TerminalMersey River Explorer Cruise, River Explorer Cruises operate hourly from Seacombe and Woodside on the Wirral. Telephone 0151 330 1444. You can start your journey at any of our two terminals and a return ticket allows you to break your journey at any terminal and rejoin the cruise later in the day. Shore Road Pumping Station, Hamilton Street, Woodside, Birkenhead CH41 6DN. Telephone 0151 650 1182. Admission Free. The home of the ‘Giant Grasshopper’ engine, a working example of the giant steam pumps built in the 1870’s and used to clear water from the Mersey Railway Tunnel. A video presentation tells the story of the construction of the Mersey Railway Tunnel, the Pump and the building itself, and ends with a view of the ‘Giant’ in action.
